Last day of our short visit to Gariwerd and we drove out to the north and around to visit a few of the less crowded locations; stopped in at Golton Gorge for a short walk, scramble and exploration even though the main walk to the gorge is closed due to the bushfires from a few years ago. Some of the gum trees were flowering and all around them was a constant noticeable humming, the trees were full of honey bees[1] -- I don't know if the bees are from the hives of apiarists or wild colonies in the bush, but there must be plenty of honey around here! Also seemed to be interspersed with European wasps[2] every time we got near the water, so unfortunately they're here in the bush too.
After the gorge we drove around to Mount Zero for a walk to the Indigenous shelter & rock paintings and along the way had a magnificent view of a Blue-winged parrot[3]. I seem to see one or two every couple of months when I'm out riding around the Otways or along the coast, but this was the first time the other members of the family had seen one. It flew up from the grass near the track to perch on an exposed branch and sat still for quite a while, long enough for all of us to get a good look, then annoyingly flew off as soon as Jo & I tried to take a photo.
