A bike ride up the Erskine falls road from Lorne in the chill and damp of the morning,
Two thirds of the way up there was a creaking from up in the trees, the unmistakable sound of some Gang-gangs[1], and the sight of one flapping across the road from one bit of forest to another with their distinctive style. Lovely little cockatoos, and sadly, now on the endangered list like so many other birds and animals in Australia
I met up with the rest of the family at the top and unpacked their bikes to continue our ride up to Mount Cowley, as we were getting ready I looked up to see the huge silhouette of a Wedgie[2] come into view over the tree tops, soaring along parallel with the clearing for the power-lines, presumably hunting for anything that comes out on the open ground. Stunning to watch as they drift silently overhead, especially in the forest where they're quite close
Riding up to Mount Cowley through the cold and damp of the forest there were a few parrots shooting off into the bush and other bird calls from the trees. A single wallaby[3] appeared, amusingly just as I said to the others, "The open grassy areas here are places I've seen wallabies in the past". Down on all four legs and slowly moving off into the thicker brush, I suspect the thick tail, dark fur and view as they vanish into the bush has contributed to some of the "Otway panther" sightings over the decades. Either it or another was back on the same patch of sunny grass when we returned, I think feeding on some rubbish left by picnickers
A cold ride, but always enjoyable up there
