The rain that's been promised for the past few days finally turned up today, a constant light rain on a warm windless day. Quieting and deadening the sounds, but making all the scents in the garden come out, the orange blossom and jasmine blossom especially. Not particularly inspiring for outings though, neither walks nor rides felt appealing.
My daily ride was a quiet and damp affair, up to Caulfield along the bike track and then around Caulfield park — giving the flock of feral geese[1] a wide berth when I eventually met them. They're large, loud, scary and at the moment while protecting their goslings, scarier. A scattering of white on the cricket field was a mixed flock of silver gulls[2] and corellas[3], from a distance similar white blobs, up close very different shapes and behaviours with the gulls roosting and trying to ignore the rain while the corellas dug about industriously after the roots of the grass.
