The weather has been wintery again all week, at least today the wind had dropped and although clouded over and cold it was still. I rode down to Karkarook park in the late afternoon for a half lap of the lake and a detour down the gravel track south towards Heatherton. A sudden change of environment and you're definitely in the sandbelt coastal country. The track is nicely sheltered by a wall of unpleasantly large concrete warehouses to the west and the ground either side overgrown with patches of bush interspersed with thickets of blackberries and other undergrowth — a haven for all the smaller birds. I nearly always seem to see pairs of doves[1], either like today, sheltering on the ground, or taking dust baths, or huddled on the lower branches. Some New-holland honeyeaters[2] darted around, bright flashes of yellow in with their black and white and small flocks of sparrows[3] chittered to each other. There were other big birds around too, but it seems a while since I've paid attention to the small fry so I'll leave it at that.
