After the downpours and storms a week ago the creeks quickly filled with roaring brown mess, and all the waterbirds disappeared — I've no idea where they go, but there's no sign of them, either hiding in backwaters or dispersed to calmer areas. Today I was back riding along Gardiners creek and the water level has dropped a fair bit, still a turgid grey-brown colour but subsiding back towards normal. All along the grassy banks for two suburbs or so I seemed to be passing moorhens[1] in anything from pairs to groups of five or six. Plenty of magpies[2] and mudlarks[3] on the grass too, loving the sports ovals and the opportunities to dig up worms and insects. Even saw a small flock of Wood duck[4] on the golf course, grazing away and enjoying the green-keepers' hard work making them a very tasty fresh grassy meal.
