With some trepidation I went out for a gentle ride today — weary legs and an aching jarred shoulder from the roads yesterday. Up to the local bike shop, down through a dog-walking park and Hegeley Dene to Glen Iris wetlands, around and up Ferndale track and home down the Anniversary trail and Scotchmans Creek trail. Nothing really unusual in the wetlands, no standout surprises like heron on Friday[1], although there were a few Little pied cormorants[2] around, some flying overhead and one perching on a branch above the water. The amusing birdlife of the day was earlier at Hegeley Dene by the ponds, a large sign very clearly states "Do not feed the ducks!" along with a picture of a duck and a very clear explanation of why feeding them is bad... and standing right next to the sign was a woman hand feeding half a loaf of bread to a great mass of feral pigeons[3] and frantically scrabbling Dusky moorhens[4] — I guess that since technically neither of them is a type of duck she could be let off on a technicality.
