Up early in a strange place, all three of us sharing a room in a holiday house in Halls Gap. I couldn't get back to sleep so I went out for a walk and ran the full gamut of the local wildlife. Only a few metres from the front door and there were a couple of Grey kangaroos[1] in the bush, off they bounded, crashing away. A few minutes later and a fox[2] trotted across a lawn, shortly afterwards a rabbit[3] or two in a different garden.
Some more movement and noises and I looked across expecting to see more kangaroos, no, a pair of very large feral deer[4] were chomping their way through another garden -- more wary than the kangaroos, they took off into the bush, easily as tall as I was, one with only one antler. A few years ago I'd never seen any, now it seems that many places I go in South-eastern Australia the feral deer are on the rise, add them in to the mess that is the feral dogs, cats, horses, goats, pigs, foxes and rabbits destroying what habitat Australia hasn't managed to cut down or dig up.
Continuing on my walk back down near the main road there were more kangaroos in the paddock across the road, this time with a few more deer and half a dozen emu[5]. Rounding it all off -- and thankfully more native wildlife this time -- there seemed to be a lot of kookaburras[6] around, dropping down out of the trees to snatch something up from the ground, or sitting on branches overlooking the paths.
