The daily ride took me out of the house at 3pm, just as the clouds that had been threatening all day finally started to rain. Grey and dark and wet for an hour, down to Gardiners creek then up through the Ferndale track under the trees. I chickened out of one of the side roads to get from Malvern road to the tunnel under the freeway, the magpie[1] that nests alongside the park in Stanley street reserve seems to be particularly obnoxious to cyclists and will nearly always swoop me. Easiest way to avoid scares and possible impacts is to avoid it and take the next street west. As an aside, I do wish that cheap space-filler news articles would check what they print, periodically one of the "Shock-horror magpie attack" articles seems to lead with a photo of a European magpie[2] copied from the internet somewhere
All the way up the Ferndale track the treetops were full of shrieks and flutters of the Rainbow lorikeets[3] coming in to roost, sunset isn't until around 6.15pm but it was so dark and gloomy that the birds were going to bed early
