Kendra is the main character of the story. She is 16 sols old, a teenager. Kendra bears both a curse, and a gift.
Kendra physiology rejects integration with the technology that allows others to be linked with the Song, a grid network that relays thought. The vast majority of colonists and crew are attached to the Song, the Grid. Those who are not part of the Song are known as "non-Hybrids".
Kendra's rejection of technology makes her the most extreme of the non-Hybrids. While everyone else is part-cyborg (Hybrid), Kendra is mostly pure, other than a tracker that is embedded into every man and woman in the colony.
Kendra's gift is that she can see "shadows", the souls of living things. Sometimes these "shadows" come in the form of a soft light, but others come in the forms of darkness.
Kendra does not understand her gift, and she has learned to hide it due to the doctors and psychiatrists in her childhood thinking that she was crazy, and trying to "fix" her condition.
