Two Thousand Twenty One

2021-12-26

Christmas coming and going has got me thinking back on the past year.

It's strange. I've felt completely ready for Christmas but it still feels wrong that we've reached the end of 2021. I should probably come to terms already with the fact that from here on out the years are only going to continue going by faster and faster.

There's been a lot of ups, a few downs, but overall it's been a really positive year.

Personal

The biggest change that happened was moving into a new place. Sort of like starting a new chapter in life, but truthfully it didn't feel like all that big of a change. Along with that I got to really enjoy reconnecting with friends after spending over a year in remote classes and work.

This year there were also a lot of fun trips with family and friends. I've picked out a few highlights.

Work

Moving from remote to in office was a welcome change. Collaboration is just plain easier and physically working around other people makes the lulls a lot more fun. I also didn't realize how much I would miss team meetings (code for games and pizza) when we started doing things remotely.

Hobbies

As far as hobbies go it's been a pretty big year. Of course I started this capsule back in February, and I like that it's given me somewhere to organize thoughts and participate in a small community.

I've also been getting deeper into Linux and FOSS as I've grown unsatisfied with the direction most tech has been going. The more I learn the more I realize how much more there is to learn. It's a good feeling.

I've taken up self-hosting this year. It's been going surprisingly smoothly. So far I'm running Nextcloud and Jellyfin, and I'm sure that list will slowly grow.

See You Next Year

I hope everyone else has had a pretty solid year. Here's to the next.
