Corn Kidz 64

Introduction

Corn Kidz 64 is a low-poly 3D platformer and created by BogoSoft and released on Steam and the Nintendo Switch. In Corn Kidz 64, you play as an edgy "Invader Zim"-esque goat (with a unicorn horn for some reason?) named Seve who is stuck in the "Nacho Emporium" dream again. Climb, headbutt, and wall jump to help Seve get his Nachos and escape his dream!

The Story

Seve the goat, wearing a sweat band and an emo styled striped black long sleeve shirt, is standing near a car that has a license plate that says "BLUMIN" at the parking lot of a building called the "Nacho Emporium". To the right of the front door of the Nacho Emporium is a soda vending machine that says "DREEM SODA"

The game starts with Seve having a dream about being at the "Nacho Emporium", a common dream for Seve. Wanting nachos, Seve goes inside of the Nacho Emporium, only to be teleported to a park called "Lexi's Monster Park", where Seve sees their friend "Alexis". The door disappears behind Seve as they enter the park and has to get to a door high up further into the park to leave. This area serves as the tutorial section of the game.

Seve the goat standing near a building with eyes and teeth and a large button on the building and a sticky note by the button. There is also a boulder with a sticky note on it. Near the boulder is a playground spring ride that looks like a 2 horned cute creature.

After finishing Lexi's Monster Park, Seve is able to enter and help out a situation at "Walloh's Hollow", a palindrome filled autumnal land of pigs that was taken over by owls.

Seve the goat standing on a bridge next to a sign that says "WALLOW'S HOLLOW", but the first 3 letters are crossed out and "OWL" is written right above the crossed out letters. Trees and buildings are around. A masked owl is flying and a bat is flying as well.

The last official level is a vertical platforming challenge called "Tower", which uses all the platforming techniques learned throughout the game to get to the top of the tower. This level is difficult. There is also an optional level called the "Tower of Anxiety" that is considerably harder than Tower.

Red cubes are collected throughout the game, serving as experience to level Seve up. There are doors throughout the game that require Seve to be at least a certain level.

My Thoughts

Seve has the ability to wall jump, wall slide, smash down while jumping (essentially a ground pound), do an attack to smash up (essentially a reverse ground pound), and smash forward in the air (which can be chained if you hit an enemy with each air smash). The platforming in this game is difficult, but feels fair and rewarding. NitroRad had mentioned in their own review of this game that they love the wall jump feel of the game. I heavily agree with that.

I have not finished the Tower of Anxiety, as my hands sweat too much while holding the controller to do some of the extremely precise wall jumping needed to continue.

It took me about 7 hours to beat this game. While I wish there were more levels, I feel very happy with my experience in this game, even if I couldn't finish the Tower of Anxiety.

While many platformers nowadays will do the platforming for you at a single button press, this game requires you to gain the skill necessary to get from point A to point B. The movement of this game is excellent and nothing felt cheap to me. If you like the idea of a moderately difficult retro 3D platformer, I highly recommend picking this game up and giving it a try.

This game is available on the Nintendo Switch and on PC via Steam for a base price of $6.99USD.
