Ecological Observations

Home

20 March, 2024

As it was expected to be the warmest and sunniest day of the week, it was ideal to go outside. More bees, and the first bumblebees, are more active now, while the first hoverflies also were observed.

Despite flora and fauna still being rather shy, I was able to observe my first butterfly of this year: One N. polychloros resting on a tree next to path following the western side of the Cherry Hill and one N. polychloros flying across a field at the northwestern brink of Zone III.

+-----------------------+----------+--------+
| Species | Location | Status |
+-----------------------+----------+--------+
| Nymphalis polychloros | Zone I | Adult |
|-----------------------|----------|--------|
| Nymphalis polychloros | Zone III | Adult |
+-----------------------+----------+--------+

Flora-wise, little has changed, explaining the low amount of insects. Very few dandelions have begun to bloom in Zone III and in front of my home, alongside chickenwort, speedwell and deadnettle. As far as my eyes can tell, the grape hyacinthe is expected to have a strong season, given how many new locations it was begun to claim in Zone I in particular.

NOTE: This oblog falsely listed Aglais urticae, instead of Nymphalis polychloros. This was changed on 21 March, 2024.
