gemweb ⥊ exploring cgi as a serverless architecture

gemweb is used to render this page! proper i18n support is next up on our agenda. for now, you'll find a mix of english, nahuatl, spanish, and portugues on various pages. the application runs on a trusted shared hosting service that keeps the spirit of the 90s internet alive. the heart of this experiment is a joke written in sed. future versions will run on tomo's new scheme runtime.

the programming language PHP is frequently disparaged (sometimes for good reason), but the development and deployment workflows are miles above what most other environments provide. in the 90s php and cgi were already providing the type of "low maintenance" infrastructure that modern serverless offerings provide at much lower complexity. there is absolutely room for improvement over cgi and php individually, but its harder to claim that there are systems that beat them together.

i'll admit, gemweb isn't written in php or your typical web scripting language, but its fun and the dev experience is honestly fantastic outside of being somewhat awk-ward to program in certain cases. 9rc is a surprisingly nice shell scripting language similar to bash. i had a good laugh while writing it.
