31-3-22 - The exciting first page

So why am I here on Gemini?

I've wanted to write a gemlog for as long as I've known that they're a thing, a year or so at least. Originally my excuse for not doing so was that I would want/have to host it myself and I had neither the money or patience to sort all that out. So I was very excited to see a site that was willing to host people earlier, and excited isn't a term I use often regarding my mood.

I found the small web and Gemini in particular to be an amazing concept and perhaps the answer to my dislike of modern internet proper. I find the modern commercial internet to be so overwhelming that I aren't capable of interacting with it anymore. I don't know if I could describe right now in precise words why, or what the tipping point was without resorting to blaming my own health. But I think that the fact that I can talk about "the internet" as if it was a singular individual with a consciousness without you thinking I'm a complete lunatic is probably a big part of my problem. It's intimidating, daunting to the point that me doing this 'out there' would be an absolute impossibility. Comparatively I guess, here, maybe part of it is a romantic nostalgia for an older form of the internet, but I feel like a sense of individuality is present here that just isn't possible anymore in the wider internet.

... I get the feeling that I'm probably preaching to the choir by saying this here thinking about it.

What's next?

In my head I feel like my entries here should be longer, covering a bunch of different things, but it's my first one and I was just excited (that word again) to get started. So maybe later in the week I'll have wrote something up a little longer and more interesting for you to read. For me the rest of the week includes digitising a bunch of old cassette tapes along with making a few batches of tea lights for the birthday of the woman who is my only contact in the country. More routine; I'll be watching AEW Dynamite in the morning and probably playing quite a bit of Babylons Fall later in the week - I don't often enjoy games as much as I have that one.
