This is the first time I did not make observations. Instead, my mother decided to record some data for me.
+-------------------------+---------------------------------+--------+ | Species | Location | Status | +-------------------------+---------------------------------|--------+ | Aphantopus hyperantus | Zone II / III | Adult | |-------------------------|---------------------------------|--------| | Argynnis paphia | Zone II | Adult | |-------------------------|---------------------------------|--------| | Maniola jurtina | Zone I | Adult | |-------------------------|---------------------------------|--------| | Melanargia galathea | Zone I / II / III | Adult | |-------------------------|---------------------------------|--------| | Pieris rapae | Zone III | Adult | |-------------------------|---------------------------------|--------| | Polyommatus bellargus | Zone II | Adult | |-------------------------|---------------------------------|--------| |-------------------------|---------------------------------|--------| | Calopteryx + | Zone II | Adult | +-------------------------+---------------------------------+--------+
Naturally, she still is a beginner and even admitted that she was unable to identify many butter- and damselflies properly. She had to ask me about "an orange butterfly that was slightly larger than a red admiral" and I told her to grab my "Ulmer" to show me what it looked like. As it appears, the season of A. paphia has just begun, just like the next generation of P. bellargus.
She also observed quite a bunch of damselflies, yet was largely unable to their genera, with the exception of a female Calopteryx sp. – quite impressive, yet rather easy, considering that spot exclusively harbors this genus and I shoved her some shots of a female C. splendens in advance.
My mother also made some additional observations when she visited our local cemetery in the late afternoon of 9 July:
+-------------------------+---------------------------------+--------+ | Species | Location | Status | +-------------------------+---------------------------------|--------+ | Aglais io | Yard | Adult | |-------------------------|---------------------------------|--------| | Vanessa cardui | Cemetery | Adult | +-------------------------+---------------------------------+--------+
Despite not being an "invasion year", V. cardui has been seen quite often, so far. While it is depressing that I currently am back at being unable to lead our field trips, I am glad that she made some crucial observations with little help.
