Hat Band

2021-11-23T19:48

Lately, I keep finding myself needing to make leather things. I'm no expert in leather and I have no intention of becoming one β€” I much prefer working wood β€” but it's often easier to make what I want than finding one to buy.

A few months ago I cut of my dreadlocks so I needed a new hat. I got an Akubra Snowy RiverΒΉ but I disliked the band it came with. One night I remembered a book that I have that could contain instructions for making another. Flipping though, I discovered it actually had a few different styles of hat band. I chose one and ordered the 3mm Kangaroo lace it called for, then waited for it to arrive.

Here are the instructions if you're inclined to make one of your own. They come from Ron Edwards' book "Skills of the Australian Bushman"Β².

A week later when the lace arrived, I gave it a try. My first attempt wasn't very good, but this is how the second attempt turned out.

With postage the lace cost AU$30 but it's enough to make three bands. All up, it took an hour to make and I'm happy with it.
