A while ago I wanted to turn my RasPi into a small server to host my projects, web site, etc. but I have kind of abandoned the idea now. Sure, I would own all my data and be in control of them, however I'd still depend on a domain provider and internet provider. I think I have now concluded I am happy to abandon the idea.

It used to be normal to host from home :)
Looking forward to soon do it again. Mostly the internal stuff that needs oodles of storage. Most new rental servers are ssd based featuring fast but tiny drives and overcharging on adding spinny disks. Combine that with an ocean of pro level hardware on the used market and it's pretty much a no brainer for me. Plus I'd be much happier fuffing around on them having local access rather then hoping nothing ever breaks that can't be fixed remotely. · 6 hours ago
@melyanna trust is a weakness ;) i have been working as a sysadmin for years in AAA companies, i'd never trust computers, if i had been a ba guy, i could have upload child pr0n to my boss PC and then call the police. when you are root on the whole company you can do sooo much evil things. it's a question of honor when you are a grey hat hacker.. don't be evil, but still knowing you could when you are in charge.... · 4 days ago
@chirale @fripster thanks for the tips, and yes, I could probably just sit down and get myself to do it now (with some effort), but I think for a while I'll be happy to let my hosting service deal with it. :D Maybe one day when I am settled more permanently this will be my new project. · 4 days ago
@bavarianbarbarian I trust no one. :) Jokes (?) aside, I believe that unless one has Snowden leves of tech savvyness and paranoia, that accessing the internet in any way will cause some form of risk (identity, data, etc). But then again these days even if you are offline and do not own a smartphone, the moment you use a credict card, have a bank account or buy a car/house, you are at risk again. I do not think this small risk is a big issue, it's just there. (was this also off topic?)) · 4 days ago
In my case (between 2013 and 2016), raspberry pi was not the ideal choice because of the unreliability of SD cards (class 10) that tended to corrupt frequently and because of the extra work required at the time to run applications on ARM processors at the time. Opting for a mini-ITX form factor with x64 processors solved that issue. · 4 days ago
maybe i'm off topic, but never trust the DNS system.. i have been working as a DNS hostmaster/sysadmin and the bullsh*t you can make with DNS reords is incredible. In an AAA company you can make the MX record providing you the mails from the CEO to you without no problem. nothing to say about when you are root and have all the nice tools like metasploit, etherape and so on.... · 5 days ago
hi. Very probably you already have an internet provide at home. You can run the server then and there I would say. I use YDNS.EU as free DNS to point to my home IP. It works flawlessly. They even provide a script to update your IP address to YDNS automatically when your home IP changes. Hope this helps... YMMV · 5 days ago
