I am a big fan of xmpp too. I remember when Google Talk would work with other xmpp domains. I never thought about this strategy. Although I don't use the fedeverse much... except to watch videos on peertube, it will be interesting to see what transpires between meta and the fediverse. I also agree that the less we have anything to do with the greedy monopolies which are only interested in their own profit, the better off we will be.

i was commenting that back then, when google had xmpp (i thought it was xmpp since the beginning, i didn't know it was a compatibility layer), it was also because their slogan was 'dont be evil'. then eric schmidt came and changed it to 'do the right thing'. i think he says in his book 'how google works' that he was surprised that during the corporate meeting someone would oppose a decition which would bring money because it doesnt correspond to not being evil slogan. and i think since they do the right thing, they decided xmpp is not their thing.

how to kill decentralized networks (by ploum) — i just read this article, very interesting. i never thought meta's involvement with fediverse could be this dangerous. and i never knew this details about google and xmpp.
