Anyone into Todd Rundgren? He is often known for his early pop/songwriter albums... but man does he have some out there experimental stuff. Plus he tended to record all the instruments himself on many of his albums (pre-digital recording). Super innovative cool stuff. The album "A Wizard, a True Star" is a good start on the experimental stuff. Though I am also partial to "Hermit of Mink Hollow", which is much more traditional in some ways, but still strange and fun (with a few lower points).

Rundgren's a legend. Some of my fav tracks from 'em include Hello it's me (the nazz version, wife and I both really dig the solo too), I saw the light, hideaway is a great 80s ballad track with really trippy synths, worlwide epiphany is a really groovy track too. It's a large body of work that involves a lot of great styles of music through the generations, todd's discography. Definitely one of the best producers and musicians of the past couple centuries.

as a 90s kid, the only rundgren I was aware of was big head Todd & the monsters. the track Bittersweet was a regular feature of the alt rock radio station WEQX at that time...
