My Gemini experience continues…
I’ve tried to look up “cool gemini websites to visit” on Google before, but to no avail. Why is that? Well, I figured out that this whole new digital world is unique and bears its own lingo. Here are some interesting Gemini lingo that I’ve learned along the way and the definitions I interpreted myself:
Gemini clients - Places to host Gemini sites. Something like Lagrange! What you’re probably viewing this post on right now! :D
Protocol - Rules that data lives by. It dictates how data is passed around.
Gopher - A small, cute animal… What? Oh, that’s not what it is? Sorry… In internet language, a gopher is a type of internet protocol that, like stated above, stores, moves, and downloads data and good stuff like that.
GitHub - A place where smart people code and develop software (since I don’t know anything about coding, I’m staying away from this place).
GemLog.Blue - A non-intimidating site accessible on Google where you can type a GemLog post. It sends data to Gemini, I guess. It’s also the wonderful program that I wrote this entry on!
I know there’s probably more, but we’ll start with these. All this internet terminology is crazy and super complicated, yet it's been here for such a long time. It’s crazy, though! Gemini has only been around for about 2 years.
Interacting with Lagrange is a little bit disorienting. It is bare bones with nothing flashy. I don’t really like it. Obviously, I am a child of the world wide web, the internet, whatever we call it. The security blanket of Google’s friendly, colorful logo is definitely something that I wish was applied to Lagrange. I’m sure there are ways to see more creativity and colors in Gemini, but I just think a text-based browser/application is too old-school to me. I think I’ll do a separate post about what I like/disliked about both. Until then.
