Gemlog #9

gemini://alexschroeder.ch/do/gallery

During my exploration, I have discovered this page that serves as a photo gallery hosted by an individual Gemini member. Although most photos included in the gallery are amateurish as the angles and lights are not set up appropriately in a professional way, they still stand out to me because their media format has impressed me. During my first few weeks of explorations in the Gemini community, I only came across Gemini members’ posts in all texts, and even though some of them tried to make their posts more aesthetically appealing, they still only used texts to make graphs instead of real images. However, in this gallery, images are directly incorporated into Gemini web pages. This Gemini gallery is against my intuition about the Gemini community since before finding the gallery, I always thought that the Gemini protocol does not even allow users to upload anything except for text. Nonetheless, although I would like to admit that image enables the Gemini community to have more formats of online content presentations, I doubt if it is really significant to the Gemini community. As I have observed so far, most Gemini members do not tend to use images in their posts. Also, since the Gemini community declares to be a simple and light-weighted online platform, I doubt if the image format would make the platform somehow too complicated. Also, to see each image, I had to click on every single link and wait for images to be downloaded, which cost me extra unnecessary steps and time. So, maybe for some particular online content, traditional websites may serve as a better platform as compared to the Gemini community.
