D&D + boardgames!

First Sail with “M” as we were waiting for Halo. Our boat collapsed and the kraken ate us as we were one step from the harbor. We were literally in the little square that borders three harbor squares so the people were standing on the shore cheering our arrival but their cheers turned to horror as our boat turned to splinter. On level 3 no mods.

D&D #boatmode was really exhausting to DM because it was a session that required a lot of subjectivity and interpretation. I needed to roleplay 600 mamluks + a couple of Hakiyah imams + some salty Flamesea mages. And try to understand all of Kerbog Khan’s resources + carefully describe four completely different and hitherto unexplored parts of the Halls of Arden Vul since they used an oracle to get clues to the whereabouts of four items.

We had a fun li’l break with DM’s story hour as they were reading the tales of Larel one eye.♄

Then boardgames; one game of Turncoats which continues to be amazing for the simple reason that every game is wildly different. I’m more and more impressed by it. And we did manage to get the situation where the lands were tied so the player with the fewest stones total won. So it is possible.

Then a game of Veritas. What a clobbering by “M”. Me and Halo were infighting so he was making hay. Final scores me 6, Halo I’m not sure but around thirty, “M” had 104 points.

Then two sessions of the old Knizia Lord of the Rings co-op (listening to Bo Hansson records of course). Our first time playing it 3p. First game was a clusterheck, only getting 37 points. I succumbed to Sauron’s influence as Pippin outside of Shelob’s cave leading Sam and Frodo to run out of resources against the witch king as they didn’t enlist Eowyn in time.. A difficult game at 3p.

Then one game of SS3. I was the super saint so I was in no hurry to vote so of course I did the opposite and immediately voted to convict Halo, who hesitated but voted back at me. He wasn’t sure, he wavered a bit between voting to convict me or “M” until we settled in a standoff. I had a mafia read from him. “M” hadn’t acted. I told him that if he promised to vote Halo, I would temporarily move my vote over to him first so “M” wouldn’t need to risk it with the hammering vote. That made him realize I was the super saint so he could trust me and we won, convicting Halo who was mafia. Of course, I’m realizing as I’m writing this that Halo could’ve immediately switched his condemnation over to “M” and won the game in that window when I had my condemnation aimed there. Which would’ve lost him the game if “M” had been the super saint but it was his only out in that moment.

Then finally two round of a parlor game Richard taught me called “What does Sandra believe?” where Halo is supposed to come up with a trivia question that has a numerical answer, I commit to an answer, then “M” guesses what number I believe, and then Halo says “higher” or “lower”, and closes to my guess wins (I can’t win, the game is about guessing what I think, I’m not a contestant). We played twice, changing roles, they won once each, both time I believed way too low. Apparently I think a 60 pound battery weighs less than two pounds đŸ€ŠđŸ»â€â™€ïž

As I noted in my patch message and in the previous tinylog entry, behavior gets a li’l weird when someone leaves mml-enable-flowed on (the default!) but forgets to turn on use-hard-newlines (not the default! And since it’s buffer local, it needs to be turned on every single time, for example with a hook).

So with these two settings kept at their defaults, separate paragraphs will get flowed together with my patch! So I sent a new version of the patch to the same #71017 thread that’ll auto-harden according to markdown semantics as a dwimmy fallback.

2024-07-06 21:08

Heck it Emacs!

A few months ago I fixed a bug in RFC 2646 handling where the last paragraph wouldn’t get reflowed unless I remembered to add a hard newline (that is, a newline with the ‘hard text property) after it, at EOT. I needed to hit one extra RET at the end. All other paragraphs would be wrapped, not just the last one.

But it still didn’t always work and today I tried to get to the bottom of why, spending the entire day debugging it, finally realizing that... It’s not even being called when there’s only one paragraph in the email. I wasted so much time before realizing that! And then getting to the bottom of why that wasn’t happening was the opposite of easy but it turnes out that Gnus by design doesn’t call the fill-flowed-encode function when there aren’t any hard newlines in the buffer. Which there aren’t gonna be if it’s a single-paragraph letter đŸ€ŠđŸ»â€â™€ïž

Use-hard-newlines is beyond useless since that’s always buffer-local and the text-reflowing is being done in a temp buffer. Instead since 2010 we’re supposed to set mml-enable-flowed to true. But don’t worry, fans of the messages-are-flowing package, I’m gonna send patches there to reflect that. I have a bunch of other changes to that package too since I’ve been using that a lot this summer.

This is all in bug#71017 (cursed palindrome!) for people who wanna dig in đŸ‘©đŸ»â€đŸ«

Lumpley, hark thy unheard cursed seeress! Wresting the “hard” and “soft” move gunk from the barren soil of the Blank Spot on the Map, even disguised with the ivory fleece of “direct” and “oblique” moves, is a danger that placeth the onus on thy MC whether to be merciful and stay her pale horse of Mung, or to bring the wrath of Pegāna down on the world of men.

Whither that malplaced yoke wandereth, in the weak heart of thy MC, wrested from the rightful throne of the Gloracle, so doeth also the famine and paucity and weaksauce of Vigorous Creative Agreement, where the embers of The Unwanted flicker and dim, where the Unburst Buds of Apocalyptica rot on the vine like the flesh of men instead of letting their wounds blossom and pour. And darkness and decay and a dulled blade shall hold illimitable dominion over all.

Therefore I decree verily ex cathedra:

Bring the ruckus!

Thy moves shall be flint, so that they may ring as bolts on the heather meadow.

Thy moves shall be polished marble so that the granite hearts of men and foes might scrape the hard landscape of thy scenery.

Bring the ruckus!

Thy moves shall be the haunting, inevitable, roiling ocean of Slid, calling and crying and yearning in the night for bones to grind to sand in the malström of Charybdis.

Thy moves shall be as beautiful and terrible as the dawn, ripe with consequence and the pungent piercing air of regret and shame.

Bring the ever-lovin’ ruckus!

Light OS is being creepy:

For example, I’m pretty sure Light are using DavX for syncing contacts, etc
 [
] I don’t want Light, or anyone else, having all my contacts and calendar info, for example.

Ewww 😰

It’s using Android 8.1, which has tons of vulnerabilities.

I don’t understand why Android is like this. Why phones get stuck on old vulnerable versions.

2024-07-03 20:03

In the past I’ve been thinking that “light” phones that’s basically just locked-down Android phones are dumb since you can just change to a more locked-down launcher. My old Fairphone (before I went dumbphone in 2017) was an example of that, except I had my own favorite apps like Text Fiction.

I’ve even been a li’l hesitant towards the Punkt even though it’s numberpad and retro beauty is a huge unique aspect of it.

I’ve also been a li’l frustrated with the not-so-open-ness of Punkt and Light. Mudita was a custom OS (that I contributed to♄) that was FOSS, and Fairphone, while Android, have been really good at making FOSS apps.

I dunno why all that went out the window just because a li’l bit of FOMO with this LP 3. That dumb and cruel price-FOMO strategy caught me like a sucker in glue 😭

My current phone is a Nokia 8210 4g. One advantage of dumbphones that clearly look like dumbphones is that I can flash ‘em and people who want me to install apps can understand that I can’t use apps. With my Fairphone, I still couldn’t use Google Play but it was harder to communicate that so a lot of things became way easier when I went dumbphone.

It was technically possible to, but I didn’t have it set up because I didn’t have a Google account. I think these days you can even get Google play apps without a Google account (not sure) but it wasn’t something I knew how to do back then if it’s even possible.

But the LP3 just looks like a smartphone in every way. That’s not gonna be great. And, if “Android phones where the company has done the locking down for you” is on the menu, I could’ve considered other alternatives that I had previously dismissed, like Punkt, or that I’ve had on my radar, like Mudita Kompakt. Maybe I still woulda gone with this, I dunno, but I didn’t think I through. I didn’t do a proper job of comparing or considering this.

Only way out is forward. I hope I’ll be happy with it once it shows up in January. End of an era for me đŸ€·đŸ»â€â™€ïž

An easy-to-use Gemini/Gopher/web trihosted journal service:

Smol Pub

2024-07-02 09:14

The problem was how servers mirrored each other. (They used UUCP to do so.) This was exploited by spammers and then croaked under the weight of binaries groups. Not that binaries and piracy is bad, it’s great, it’s just that this was a li’l wasteful way to do it compared to peer-to-peer.

An upside to the Usenet philosophy was redundancy after a catastrophe. That is awesome. But if the wastefulness is causing a catastrophe that sort of defeats that purpose.

ActivityPub is more fine-grained. It copies specific posts to specific users. Not saying the savings are particularly huge, especially with thread servers like PieFed.

It’s this finer granularity that’s the reason why hashtags are bad for discovery, for emulating IRC channels—they worked awesomely for that on Tumblr, Twitter, Cohost, but that can’t work on ActivityPub unless all servers start mirroring all posts, which would kill them. (Bsky’s AT Proto was designed from the ground up to have fewer and huger backend servers. I’m more interested in ActivityPub’s smolnet approach.) Illuminant’s model of using hashtags as keywords is much better; that UX affords thinking of them as a way to classify and filter the posts you’ve already got, not as a way to reliably find new posts.

TL;DR: Inktober should be one or more Fedi groups, not a Fedi hashtag. What works on ActivityPub is more akin to Reddit’s subs, not Tumblrs tags.

2024-07-02 08:49

That seems like it’d fix the underlying wastefulness of the Usenet architecture. NNTP was never the problem, UUCP was. ActivityPub has some pros and cons there given that it’s less redundant.

Games two and three of Radlands we were trying out drafting camps from a shared pool instead of each choosing from six. We won one each playing that way.

Boardgames with “M” and we went for a co-op marathon. First we played Sail which was probably the best out of all the games we played. We died on scenario one, then beat scenario one, then skipped to scenario three and died, then added in one crow’s nest (that was a huge help) and two ally ships and a whirlpool but we those three were all duds. We met the first ally ship but had no arms in the disc to shoot. But thanks to the crow’s nest we beat scenario 3. So four games: 1L, 1W, 3L, 3-with-mods-W

Then we played two rounds of the old Lord of the Rings co-op. First I had forgotten the rule that if you play two cards they can’t be both grey nor both white. So we easily destroyed the ring. Then we tried again remembering that rule and we were killed by Gollum (we didn’t have seven shields on his tile— on our first playthrough we didn’t even meet Gollum since we rushed Shelob before drawing any sundials, but here he was more than we could handle).

In between those two LotR runs we did a dinner break with three games of 20 Questions. First round was a success, Kerbog Khan, an NPC from The Halls of Arden Vul. Second was a failure, a basic “Mountain” Magic card. He had narrowed it down to a color less or blue Magic card with one question left, guessed “Sol Ring” and that was a success. Third we forgot to count and he just kept guessing until he figured it out. A male lesbian fictional character who is dead and immortal and alive and was on Star Trek and has his own TV show and who is in Marvel but not in the MCU. Can you guess it? Sherlock Holmes! Who is Mystique in the 616.

After LotR we played one scenario of the Castle Ravenloft boardgame. A speedrun, we played scenario 8 and the secret staircase was the sixth tile down which is the fastest it can possibly be. We were also helped by our tank (Thorgrim) finding the secret portal that attacks you three times but if you survive you can go wherever. I love how fast this game is round to round, but this session was too fast as a session.

Then we brought out Mists over Carcassonne, our first attempt at level four. We did really well, had both dogs in the farm upstate and was almost to the finish line where we drew an unexpected three-ghost–tile for the loss. Afterwards we found out that we had forgotten that at 2p you’re supposed to have 2✕3 meeples, not 5. That woulda been easier because we were running out of meeples to bury in the cemetaries.

Then we played a game of the wonderful li’l Shaharazad but we didn’t remember the scoring properly and blew up with no points round two, for ten points total.

That was it for co-ops! We had also trotted out The Cure, Nautilion and Untold but left the lid on them them to unwind with a trio of competive games at the end. First a game of Yahtzee using the Scandinavian “Yatzy” rule set rather than the American rules. I was so incredibly lucky; both of us we only needed to scratch the 5-of-a-kind, we got everything else (including both straights, which are way harder to get with this Euro ruleset than with the American rules), with one exception. I was -5 in “the attic” so I needed four sixes, which I got, saying “never didn’t have it” and I got the attic bonus. Meanwhile, “M” was +5 in the attic, he only needed a single 2. Which he was nonchalant about, instead making sure he had a good full house. He even took a round out to chase fives and sixes for a good “Chance”. So he had dug his grave well and good, thinking that he had two attempts times three rerolls to find that final missing two. That’s a 98.58% chance. Which he flubbed. I was chanting “Ra! Ra! Ra!”. He scratched the Yahtzee space for want of a two, for one last try for it— which he also flubbed. What a wonderful world.

Then Regent using the modded rule I’m playtesting where the highest upcard goes first rather than the lowest. What a clobbering, we had 18 coins each and I lost it all over four hands. I didn’t win a single round. Fun fun fun.

Finally one game of Good and Bad Ghosts where he immediately impressed me using parity spacing properly which I seldom see new players get right, but I could keep up, so neither of us has the material game locked down and in the end he stepped on one poison ghost too many and lost. Ghosts is one of my BGG “ten”-rated games, I love its mix of chess spatiality and poison simsel. Iocaine powder. Maybe it’s my favorite game of all time, I dunno.

Talking afterwards which of the games had been the best and it might’ve been Sail. A fun co-op with a cozy vibe and fine-grained difficulty adjustment, which is something the other three co-op games all lack.

But, there’s needless fiddly complexity in having a variable amount of uses and only getting back some of them on a short rest.

I often wish was a 5e dev, I think it’d be more fun for me to be a dev than a designer. Although I’d make the game so simple that it almost wasn’t fun anymore. It’s hard to strike the right balance because for many players all this fiddliness is overwhelming, for a handful it’s that detailed texture that makes the game interesting for them. In my own group, a lot of the players who have leaved have been those who have been overwhelmed*, and those who have stayed have been those who really nerd deep into various “builds” and detail like “arcane recovery” or whatever.

In one of the playtests, the sorlock combo was removed but then it was quickly returned. I was still hoping it’d be gone for the real thing but from what I can tell it’s not:

1756-2024-warlock-vs-2014-warlock-whats-new at Dndbeyond

I.e. the fix that I wanted (that was briefly there) was that blasting would’ve scaled with your class levels rather than your character levels, just like extra attack did for the martial classes. Not that sorlock is that OP, it’s more that it just feels dumb to go straight witch for twenty. In other words, it’s not that I would wanna reign in sorlock compared to fighters and wizards, it’s more that I would wanna make single-classing witch be more appealing. It’s a bummer when someone can get 99% of your raison d’ĂȘtre with a toe dip.

(This is sorta unrelated to how a fantasy world that has all three of these casting styles is somehow less interesting than one that only had one (like Earthsea, Middle Earth, Sorcerer, Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell, Twin Peaks etc) or two (like Discworld for the most part although I guess they do bring in some Sourcery too in that one book). Especially sorcerers with their natural blasting feels like they make those who have actively sought their powers less cool by comparison. I dunno. Claremont did make it work, he could mix characters like Storm and Magik no problem and bring in sentient space tech viruses and bird aliens to boot. So maybe there’s something for these maximalist fantasy settings.

That’s my main issue with many of the alt D&D settings like Eberron; they all end up more similar than they would’ve if they curated or removed stuff.

I ran a homebrew setting for a few sessions briefly where sorcerers, witches and wizards had the same source for their powers, “the glitch”. Sorcerers had gotten glitched themselves, witches and warlocks were traitors to the glitch who had made pacts, while wizards had stolen knowledge from the glitch. Halo played a warlock who I gave the option of “small price + hard quest” or “high price + easy quest”. He chose the latter and gave up the ability to feel happiness—his shadow had a hole where the heart should be—and for his quest he needed to fell four trees. Those trees where then used by the glitch in their war against civilzation, to build a summoning tower. So even the “easy” quest had some consequences.

2024-06-29 08:18

I don’t get it. Are the classes in 5.2 just buffed overall? Or are they about the same power level as before?

That meant I could also update some links on some of the older posts. I still wanna make the entire capsule as a whole have some sorta coherence.

This is also why I think it’s good that Gemini limits pages to three levels of header: it encourages splitting pages up into sub pages, like a texinfo document or a Gopher site or a wiki or a book with multiple chapters.

Re: @michael 2024-06-27 20:59 +02:00

The most likely reason is that they’re using the same cert for something else too. I usually use my Let’s Encrypt for most things but for Gemini I almost thought things through so I have a snakeoil set for ten years. If I has thought it through more fully, I would’ve set it to 120 years. It’s already been almost four years out of the three.

As far as your other question goes

The underlying Debian itself is lightweight enough and you can choose to run different desktop environments on top of it, Gnome is just one option, there are others that are more lightweight. There’s no need to switch distros in case you have an issue with Gnome.

Rent logiskt sett:

Putting the links more interleaved between the paragraphs like I did today in “Thinking”, I’m gonna do that sometimes but it’s not gonna be my default because I also really like the uninterrupted text followed by a list of links at the end. To me that’s a calmer reading experience based on the foundation that the links really are extra, only for those who want to read more, not something to constantly lead you to jump away from the text.

Sometimes what it becomes is not even a wholly new entry. Like today what started as me writing a tinylog entry ended up as a replacement for the top half of my old exploitation page, so I changed that page out for this new one.

One realization we had while thinking about the size of the new phone’s screen was that width, rather than length, is more valuable for improving overall usability across the LightOS.

But then why isn’t it landscape?! Like a Game & Watch.

2024-06-24 08:56

I saw that “The Light Phone III currently only supports an English keyboard/language on the device” but since the Lightphone II says something similar but does have diacritics support, I wasn’t sure. It also said they were working on it. I’m not too worried about that (although I must be able to send aring, oumlat, aumlat because unlike email my texting is pretty much all in Swedish). The OLED screen is a bigger issue. I’m giving it a few days. I’m gonna be offline for a few weeks around the next price hike so if I want the FOMO pricing I’ve got to make my mind up before I unplug, but I’ve a reminder set for that.

I’m leaning no, but not stressing since I still have some time to make my mind up. It sucks that they’re doing FOMO hiking, I’m very susceptible to FOMO so I sorta don’t wanna support that. I’m glad they’re doing it based on dates rather than units, though. Units would be a lot more stressful and I’d definitively nope out then.

My current phone is a Nokia 8210 4G that’s a li’l bit crash-prone and has some weird bugs but as long as nothing gets worse I can use it indefinitely. I was interested in the Light II since it’s smaller, but it doesn’t work on my carrier. I have a used 2013 Kindle that I use all the time (don’t worry, I never buy stuff from Amazon, I use Calibre) and if that could call, do text messaging, and be used as a hotspot, with an option to turn all of that off with a super airplane mode for just reading, that’d be great. It’d be like a phone that took up zero space since the phone features would live in something I’m already carrying with me. (I usually don’t bring the e-ink reader actually but I would if it could combine book reading with calling.)

Conversely I might be interested in a huge, comfortable-to-hold phone that looked like an mid 20th century landline phone (like an Ericofon or a Dialog) that was plugged into the wall but could use a sim card instead of a land line number. That way I would just leave my phone at home. Main reason I need a phone is to call the doctor.

Although I accidentally forgot my phone twice earlier this summer, one of those times I was visiting Barney and I was pretty scared I’d get lost or take the wrong bus stop or something. So portable phones can be handy in that sort of emergency I guess.

I’ve been a GTD Goody Two-Shoes for a li’l more than a week now; not in a way that feels comfortable and automatic, more like a constant struggle, a cat on a hot tin roof, a Sisyphus boulder that’s always on the verge of slipping.

I’m healthier than I’ve been in a long time so my plan is to keep this up forever, hoping and believing it’ll get easier, like it has before.

I remember Allen saying something that like many new habits it’s hardest a few weeks in; when we go from constantly minding it to “I’ve got this, it’s just my automatic habit, it’s just how I work now”, in the twilight between those two lands is the largest risk to lose your way.

I’m not there yet, I’m still in the “constantly minding it” phase.

One awesome thing about episodes 1, 2 and 4 of The Acolyte is how whenever it looks like something obvious and boring is going to be stretched out over the season, like I’d think “oh no, now she’s gonna clear her name and she’s obviously gonna succeed but it’ll take all season”, I immediately get proven wrong and it instead happens right away and something new more interesting also happens. The show keeps going “yes, and” in a great way.

I know that that’s the sort of thing Pitch Meeting guy makes fun of as if were barely an inconvenience but it’s a step in the right direction for TV and comics. I hope we’re finally seeing a pendulum swing away from the hyperdecompressed era that almost killed comics.
