Kitchen Sponges - what's up? I always wash dishes with a sponge, and they used to last more than a couple of days. Now I am tossing sponges every other day because they positively stink like a moldy bacteria-hive dipped into a vat of tar.

I heard putting them in a dishwasher and / or microwave helps

@gritty: possibly, but then you have a rapidly decomposing plastic sponge that is shedding nanoparticles onto your dishes. Also don't have dishwasher or microwave.

I've been eyeing crocheted dish scrubbies made from hemp on etsy to get away from plastic sponges, maybe you may be interested in them as well. hemp is tough, extremely mold/mildew resistant and gets softer as its washed.

I am experimenting with a piece of paper towel inside an abrasive plastic mesh (the kind garlic and onions come bagged in). The paper holds the soap and provides a nice padding for the scrubbing mesh - and I can get rid of it when done. Plastic seems to last forever, scrubs better than abrasive stuff on sponge, and is easy to rinse. Works so much better!
