Google just renamed its "Bard" AI thing to "Gemini." Feels a little inconsiderate, and maybe spiteful...

I've been word-of-mouthing Gemini to friends and they google it and yup. Oh look, AI is retro ? No, stop, gemini is not a google product. gemini://google.com NO NONO · 4 months ago

i used to think it wasnt, until I decided to actually CHAT with it one time (since all these shitty AIs are just overglorified chatbots) to ask about the impact of smallnet and how it might be a challenger to mainstream web: it told me it didn't know what that was, to describe what that is, and to make EXAMPLES OF WHAT THAT INCLUDES. YEAH. ITS SOME PETTY WEIRD GOOGLE SPITEFUL SHIT!

EVEN GPT KNOWS WHAT SMALLNET, AND GEMINI, IS! HMMMMMMMMM. HMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM!!!! (!?!?) · 5 months ago

@mysterons that's fair · 5 months ago

@gritty good point, although I think Gemini already strikes the right balance between being niche and discoverable. Part of what makes it great is the small but active community, and burying it further could prevent newcomers from finding the community and replacing the inevitable departures. · 5 months ago

eh. I think it's good cover. makes Gemini rely more on word of mouth. · 5 months ago

This after the crypto scam named "Gemini" which popped up after Gemini first started to catch on.

Name theft like this make me think that every project should use a name like "Varfuz" or "Gorfblon" and ignore the haters. · 5 months ago
