Yiddish and Shelta (the Cant) โ€” anyone know where it would be possible to start with these languages? I speak a bit of German so I am hoping Yiddish wouldn't be entirely foreign to me and I am quite fascinated by it; it would open up a new world to me. As for Shelta / Traveller's Cant - again there is a fascination, and it would actually come quite useful to me in my setting. Any hints?

Duolingo features Yiddish as one of its many languages.

When I was little, my grandmother spoke yiddish to her friends, especially when she didn't want me to understand. She never explained yiddish words to me. Unfortunately, that's how languages die...

Mind, how good is Duolingo? My experiences with it were mixed.

@requiem: I am on Day 85 of Spanish on DuoLingo. At first I was not impressed, but learned to appreciate it as I realized that it actually works, and I am retaining a lot. I've been trying other apps, as well as self-directed stuff with youtube and ChatGPT, but really, the only things I know well are the ones I practiced in DuoLingo. And I do it a lot (extra practice for each lesson).

What I love about duolingo is that there are no 'lessons' -- they just sneak new stuff in at a pace that maximizes retention. It's a great way to get a good grasp of the basics, and you can do other things to expand your knowlege.

@requiem: Oh, it's complete shit in the free version, because you get distracting commercials in-between excercises, and you only get 3 errors and have to restart.

The paid version is well worth it -- no error penalty, no ads.

There is usually a free trial, or try code APRILFOOLS2024 (google duolingo coupons). They sometimes run 1/2 price promos, but the annual cost is not very much, compared to a single lesson with a real person.
