Watching Machinery

2021-07-25

---

I am flying out of town today to go to an airshow. My flight was scheduled to leave at 8 AM, but due to a fault with the computer controlling engine 2, the aircraft had to return to the gate, and the flight has been delayed until 12 noon.

Flight delays seems to be rare for me. I had to change and evening flight to an early-morning flight in 2014, and a delay in a flight from France in 2009 caused me to miss a connection, delaying my return for several hours.

For the most part, I don't mind flight delays. They give me a chance to explore the airport, watch ground operations, see planes departing and arriving, and look at nearby facilities and hangars. I get to pause and look at how the aerospace industry operates.

Of course airports and aircraft are a passion of mine, but I also find great fascination in simply getting a glimpse of the machinery of our daily lives. I like watching the operations at warehouses, loading docks, truck lots, construction sites, train yards, manufacturing facilities, power plants, and all sorts of other industrial sites. The modern world, in all its technical grandeur, is astounding to me; I want to know how it works.

My view seemed to be the minority this morning. I heard a lot of groans as people deboarded. That's okay with me; the quicker they get off, the sooner I'm able to look around in peace.
