Rob's Gemini Capsule has launched!
At the time of writing, only the log has been set up to be served over Gemini. I spent some time yesterday writing scripts that would convert gemtext-formatted log entries to gopher-friendly plaintext entries, as well as updating gemtext indexes and gophermaps simultaneously, so that writing a single entry file will cause both the logs on both sites to fully update.
Gemini, as stated by solderpunk, does not intend to replace Gopher or the web, but live peacefully alongside them. However, I worry that if site owners serve the exact same content over both Gopher and Gemini, visitors will tend to favor one protocol over the other. I want to encourage the use of both protocols. So going forward, some of my content will be Gemini-exclusive and some will be Gopher-exclusive.
I haven't made a final decision as to what will live where. Gopher seems to be better suited for serving binary files than Gemini, so binary content will likely stay there. Meanwhile, I intend to talk about some mathematical subjects that interest me, and those writeups will probably live on Gemini. Other content, such CGIs, might be served from both sites, as will the changelog and my contact information, of course.
Both sites pull content from the same pool of documents, which is controlled by one git repository. Thus the changelog will show updates from both sites. This should help visitors see what's available on both sites, including content that might be exclusive to one or the other.
The capsule will be quite lively in the next few days. Stay tuned.
