Just came across this post: gemini://ploum.be/2023-02-22-leaving-github.gmi. I just needed a gentle reminder to get out of github. I'll be making preperations to make the migration soon. I already have a paid sr.ht account, so that's where I'll be heading. I can also think of other services that I want to start migrating out of. I'll probably make a page on my capsule to keep track of what I need to do, and keep a log of things that are done.

I tried to move everything to self hosted years ago and I'm still in the middle of trying. It's almost impossible, especially since I get constant pushback from everyone around me. · 1 year ago

i don't use github anymore, but i'm definitely tied into the google drive/ google workspace ecosystem (partially because that's what my family's business uses).

I really want to move us over to self hosted options, but the time and effort investment is prohitibitive right now. hopefully someday not in the too far future the time will come... · 1 year ago

Lots of big cloud services will crumble in this decade, I think. Google products are no longer high quality and operable like they were five to ten years ago. YouTube policy is authoritarian and monopolist. Microsoft is neglecting consumer experience in favor of corporate customers.

I think your course of action is the right one (for this reason among many others). I've cut over to self-hosted sourcehut and email, and cryptpad works pretty great for whatever I used google docs for · 1 year ago
