hello everyone!! not a daily log posting but a question — what do you think about the commercialism of science? had some sort of talk in uni about this person’s company, and their biology-relevant project. My problem with this is, not only did the person completely ignore the work of those under his company (mostly underpaid students that just graduated, of course) and took the credit for THEIR job, but the way they described the project felt… corporative. No concern about the ecological impact of their company, completely avoiding questions regarding the probable dangers of modified products, etc. my question comes from a place of “is this how things *have* to be?”

yeah, I think both the preceeding posts are onto it. Industry is the same. You can't invent anything that your company dosen't own by virtue of your employment. You couldn't work in the industry for non compete clause if you wanted a job. As @bavarianbarbarian said, I've got better things to do these days. It's reaching a point of enough and saying this is good. We're losing the benifits of scale by stepping back, but have to ask it thoes benifits outweigh the harm of system of scale and if so how do we mitigate, or do without. · 5 days ago
Things have gone downhill since the university was taken over by the mantra of Taylorite productivity in the early 1900s. It led, step by step, to "publish or perish", the bane of any actual thinking person. This in turn has led to all sorts of crass manipulations, one of which is universities giving tenure track preference to those who can get grant money so they can setup labs, so they can hire students who do the research and write the papers, so the lab head can sign his or her name at the end, taking maximum credit, so the university can look good. It's all about money and prestige. The culture of inquiry is pretty much dead at the university. IMHO. · 5 days ago
to be honest, i don't care anymore about such things... i used to be a sysadmin vor AAA companies, research and development and other bleeding edge bs.. nowadays.. i am happy to sit in the garden, petting my cat and growing plants... i am done with society, just leave me alone.. except from small communies like station and a fistful of good friends... please, just go away... · 6 days ago
