E Y E L A N D is a self-described "wander-around-and-figure-it-out" game by first time game dev Ron Lent. The game was developed in the Pulp editor.
In E Y E L A N D you play as a little guy who lives alone on an island. His loneliness gives way to him waking up in a mysterious land full of strange buildings and creatures. As you might expect from a "wander-around-and-figure-it-out" game, you will spend your time with the game wandering around, solving puzzles, and talking to the people you find.
Graphically, this game is surprisingly gorgeous for Pulp. Ron Lent has managed to bring a lot of life out of Pulp, and has pulled off some surprising effects within the limitations of Pulp sprites--in particular I was impressed with a rain falling animation on one screen. The spirte animation is fluid and lively, they make good use of light and dark environments and everything is very readable in terms of what you're looking at (not always the easiest feat with Pulp's tiny sprites!). The writing and feel of this game are simple but great. I particularly liked the main character's inner thoughts being represented as thought bubbles you interact with out in the world.
Aside from just wandering around figuring out what various NPCs you meet need to solve their problems, the bulk of the gameplay comes from the puzzles, and there's a really solid variety of them. Each room presents a different challenge, but does a great job of making it clear what the challenge is (solving it of course is on you).
The one downside to this game--which is being worked on, and will hopefully in the future no longer be an issue--is that there is no save function. The game takes about an hour to complete. You can of course lock your Playdate while not playing, but until save is added be sure to set aside time to play this game without your Playdate battery dying or without wanting to hop into other games until it's done. Otherwise, E Y E L A N D is a delightful little adventure puzzle game and once again I am absolutely shocked at how many first time devs have hit it out of the park with what they've made on the Playdate.
