2022/0814/1400 — magpies!

It doesn't matter how often it happens or how obvious it is, I really don't like being swooped by magpies[1]. I didn't like it on my walk or ride to primary school and I don't like it now! Each year through late winter and in to spring I spend more and more time watching them carefully, checking for the first swoop and the "official start" to the swooping season, with the caveat that swooping season is whenever a given magpie decides.

I've seen them over the past few weeks, all glossy in their best breeding plummage, some scratching about with beaks full of nesting material

Last Sunday a rider going in the opposite direction yelled out, "Watch the magpie!" as I was heading towards Westall station, a location where I've known an aggressive one to nest and swoop for the past few years. No problem for me that time

This morning riding along the bike path somewhere in Dandenong South there was a loud "Woosh!" and a crack! from the beak snap just behind my left ear. As fairly common I hadn't seen or heard it coming. At least it didn't hit me, and after flying up to a tree and following me for a while decided to leave me alone, I guess I'd left its territory. The result of course was that I spent more time scanning the skies and looking wildly around at any loud warbles, but there were no further swoops ... for today.
