Only a couple of days after the winter solstice and its still very dark when we get up in the morning, the sun doesn't rise until after 7.30. Stepping outside to get the newspaper a pair of Grey butcherbirds[1] across the railway were calling loudly back and forth, later as we had breakfast they moved across to our side of the lines and a few houses past us, but still the loudest thing around. Not a glimpse of them to be seen, but most definitely there
