2022/0405/1330 — lunch walk

We finally got some sunshine back after four days of complete overcast and dismal weather, I went out for a walk around the campus on my lunch break, around past the new heart hospital and up alongside Blackburn road, then back into campus along the raised walkway over the Jock Marshall reserve. I stopped as usual on each of the lookouts to see what I could see in the ponds and undergrowth, it seemed fairly quiet today with no sign of the turtles, perhaps its starting to be too cool. A pair of little Australasian grebe[1] were paddling about, looking very industrious with their tiny legs spinning away under the water, but surprisingly no other ducks or cormorants to be seen, only a lone Spotted dove[2] fluffed up on an overhanging branch keeping itself warm. As I turned to go a Buff-banded rail stalked out of the undergrowth beside the pond, saw me looking down at it and scurried off at speed back under the reeds — lovely colours and patterns, its interesting how they vary between being exceptionally shy in some places and completely accustomed to people in others, to the extent that they stalk around picnic tables and scavenge for scraps
