Ticking off another day of COVID isolation, wandering the garden and checking out the hyper-local wildlife. There's worms in the compost, pill-bugs & slugs as well. The large female Orb spider[1] can still be found every day in the plum tree, varying amounts of the remnants of her web strung from branch to grass
Then across to the vegetable beds, the tomatoes are finishing up and if we don't get a few more days of hot sun we'll have to pick them green. The zucchini plants are starting to die off too, drying up and going mildewy, the few remaining zucchini only about finger sized and not really growing much. Then I noticed the beetles! Every zucchini leaf seems to have from one to three yellow and black ladybeetles running around on it … I'm not sure whether they're eating the leaves or pests on the leaves, pests or pest removers? Very attractive in their Richmond colours, a quick check online seems to confirm that they're Fungus eating ladybirds[2], eating the mildew — well if that's the case there's plenty there for them to eat
