2022/0316/1630 — shiny

For my mental and physical health I went out today for my daily ride, down and around Karkarook lake. Grey and overcast and all I saw on most of the way around the lake was a large flock of Silver gulls[1], a small flock of Rock doves[2], and a few Little ravens[3] making noise and hunting for scraps on the grassy slopes from the picnic ground to the water. Further around a dozen Pukeko[4] were stalking about grazing, with the park almost deserted they've come up from the reeds by the water to feed. Then another pigeon caught my eye, a smaller head and a tubbier body than the domestic pests, and more inclined to walk away and rely on camoflage rather than fly. A Common bronzewing[5] looking truly gorgeous in the dull light, the metallic wing patches glowing and the fine patterns on the wings and body showing up here as it stood on a very green lawn. A few minutes and several hundred metres later I came across another, this one standing in dry twigs, leaves and bracken in near perfect camoflage
