Now that we're finally back in the office a few days a week and back on campus I can take up my habit of lunch-time walks, sometimes in the surrounding strees, sometimes like today, around the campus and especially over to the lake and Jock Marshall Reserve.
No sign of the turtles today, its too cool, grey and cloudy, but there are at least five grebes swimming, splashing and diving around in the main pool in the reserve. Tiny things, Australiasian grebes[1], the adults colourful, the young almost the same size but a duller plummage, mostly grey all over. From talking with a bird watcher some time ago I learnt that they've been one or two pairs nesting here for years. There's also a Pied cormorant[2] sitting asleep on a dead tree, and the calls of Kookaburras[3] from somewhere in the trees
Then back around the lake near the student residences, you can get right alongside the water if you want, unlike the fenced-off Jock Marshall reserve that can only be looked down into from an overhead walkway. Smelly from mud and rotting vegetation washed around by the rains on the weekend, nothing much visible except a solitary Swamphen[4] standing in the reeds and a Dusky moorhen[5] paddling around, tail flicking up and down like clockwork
