My first day back at work on campus and a grey rainy day it was. Out at lunch time to find something to eat, then to walk around outside caught between not wanting to be inside and having to wear a mask, and not wanting to get cold and wet. Suiting the dismal cold weather were a few Little ravens[1] cawing and foraging for scraps, pretty much the only birds to be seen in the rain. Then walking through a courtyard near the Engineering faculty I had a pair of Masked lapwings[2] scurry out of the garden bed in front of me and run ahead, wings out and half flapping, but preferring to stay earthbound rather than fly if they could possibly avoid it. I didn't see any chicks but suspected there might be some around nearby
