The first reptile spotting of the season — as I was walking around to the front garden at lunch time I found a skink[1] basking in the sun on the timber edge of the front steps. A bit surprising, partly because the local cats seem to be very active and I suspect have killed off and eaten most of the skinks and geckos[2] that we had, but also due to it only being around 12°C at the time! I'd have thought they'd still be safely away hibernating and waiting for a few degrees more warmth, but no, there it was on the dark timber, sheltered from the wind and soaking up the sun, darting off down into the plants and under the front deck as soon as I moved into view.
