Today it'll be about the local park and my morning walk, we're back in lockdown for seven days and I go out for half an hour to walk up through the park & back before sitting down to work from home.
It was a cool, grey, misty morning, the low clouds and early light drained all the colour from everything, and not many birds around to see, although plenty to be heard on the walk. There was the illegal rooster from across the railway line, but we'll ignore him, same as the council has for at least the last decade. (I suspect the "the illegal rooster" is like "the dread pirate roberts" and a number of individuals have filled the role). Magpies[1] warbled up in the trees, they always seem to enjoy the damp mornings. As usual the Noisy miners[2] were being noisy and brash, small flocks of six to eight birds that we could see up in the trees, calling and shouting. Also in the honeyeater family the startling loud abrasive call of the Red wattlebirds[3], again up in the trees, hunting for eucalypt blossom and fighting off the miners.
Out of the park and heading back home along the road a number of Rainbow lorikeets[4] shot overhead, its light enough that they're starting to move around from their roosts and off to feed.
Then down on the lawns some Common mynas[5], one of the far too efficient introduced pests that's taken over and driven out so many of the native birds.
