My afternoon bike ride today took me through suburban streets and shops, no bushland corridor, no creek, no parks, and it was reflected in the birdlife seen and heard. Feral pigeons[1] spiralling up from roofs with a clattering of wings, small flocks of Common mynas[2] foraging and calling in trees, the only native species are those few that adapt well to people and buildings; the Noisy miners[3] bullying from the bushes, the Rainbow lorikeets[4] flying over in search of flowering gums, and a few magpies[5] and mudlarks[6] foraging for worms in lawns.
