Lunchtime walk on a grey overcast damp day, around the campus and then spend a bit of time sitting at a bench overlooking the lake ... the lake that years ago was a stormwater drain, but then in more enlightened times has been reinvented as more of a wetlands.
A handful of coot[1] paddling and hooting, there's a little pied cormorant[2] sitting very still on a post and easy to overlook, two or three moorhens[3] stalking in the reeds and a family of three Australasian grebe[4] -- two young and one adult -- paddle around in the middle of the lake.
Over it all, shrieking and squawking, endless numbers of Rainbow lorikeets[5] and Musk lorikeets[6] darting back and forth between the flowering gum trees; individually, in pairs or small flocks, they're never still and never quiet! Sadly, there was a dead Musk lorikeet on the footpath next to our building when I got back to the office, I think it had flown into the window.
