Once again my "daily" promise to write something, anything, about the wildlife I experience has all fallen in a heap. The last two weeks were school holidays and we went away for five days -- to the rusty house and the dark house, but that's another story -- and I didn't write anything. I did jot down a few notes, so maybe I'll backfill... Regardless, here I am, half back on track.
Today started out cold and clear, a bright blue sky and no wind. Riding to work in the morning there were Rainbow lorikeets[1] shrieking from all the trees. Through the morning the variablity of autumn made itself felt, gradually growing colder, greyer and damper. By the time I went out on my lunch time walk it looked as though it would rain any moment. A small flock of eight Crested pigeons[2] huddled on the footpath in a nearby street, presumably sharing body heat and what little extra they could get from the concrete path. As I walked up they tried to run away, as usual avoiding flight until the last possible moment, then flew up to a low branch and promptly came back down as soon as I'd passed by.
