2021/0327/1730 -- myna miner

All week there's been debate raging in the letters to the editor of the paper; myna vs miner. The "native" Noisy miner[1] is in almost plague proportions in many parts of Melbourne, an obnoxious belligerant bird that bullies anything and everything regardless of size, up to and including humans. They're in such numbers that there's a noticeable drop in other bird numbers, but because they're "native" people are loathe to do anything to discourage them or mention culling. On the other hand are the introduced Common myna[2], one of the two bird species in the world's fifty most common invasive species, and another one that has caused a drop in indigenous wildlife numbers whenever they get a foothold in Australia and get established. They're both pests, and any semblance of a naturally balanced ecology is so out of kilter that active population control of both is probably needed.
