2021/0319/1700 -- heard

Not the wildlife that I saw, today it's more the wildlife that I heard.

Early morning and there are Magpies[1] warbling from the railway powerline posts, then the incessant calling of a Grey butcherbird[2] first from our garden, then over in the neighbour's, then a tree over the other side of the railway. I never see it, but it certainly makes itself known, in other areas they get quite tame and come begging for food, here they're more often heard than seen.

Then out in the afternoon for a family bike ride, up to Caulfield, around the park in the centre of the racecourse and down to Booran park before coming home. On the grassy fields in the centre of the park all the normal birdlife is absent today, just the repeated Pee-wee pee-wee of a... Pee-wee[3] (Mudlark, Magpie-lark, you choose) as it chases insects and digs for worms. Slightly later and there's the mournful calling as a flock of twelve Pied currawong[4] fly over heading south.

Detour on the way home for an icecream, not so much calling but noisy flapping, the ubiquitous feral pigeons[5] around the Oakleigh shops, then now that I'm at home, the quiet cooing from a pair of Spotted dove[6] somewhere in the garden.
