2020/1119/1700 — heatstruck possum

Another few days missed and retrospectively filled out, brief notes for the 19th-22nd filled out on the 23rd.

A hot summery day with the temperature in the low to mid 30's and a dry dusty wind, once again not ideal conditions for either riding or wildlife, but out I went and off to explore creek-side paths to try and stay in the shade of the trees. Small flocks of ravens -- Little raven[1] -- everywhere, quietly hopping around with their wings half out and beaks open, panting in the heat. About the only other wildlife I heard was the ubiquitous Noisy miners[2], but then on the way back through a park in Mount Waverley I saw a pair of Magpies[3] on the ground chasing and pecking at something. Stopping and investigating showed that they were attacking a baby ringtail possum[4] that had fallen from the tree, presumably in the heat, its eyes were barely open and presumably somewhere up above was the mother. I picked it up and thought about trying to call a wildlife rescue place, but the ringtails are so common, counted as pests in gardens, that I put it back in a sheltered part of the tree and left it to fare as it could.
