2023/wk7 — does this work for me?

2023-02-14 / Tuesday / squeaky beetle

On the ride home along Scotchmans Creek trail I found a large black beetle, it was crossing the path in the Huntingdale wetlands so I stopped to pick it up. Partly because I thought it might be a Christmas beetle and other than one dead one, haven't seen any for the past few years, partly just because I thought someone else would ride over it. About the size and solidity of a Christmas beetle, but black, and it didn't like being picked up, wheezing and squeaking at me, which I always find surprising in a beetle. Escorted it off the path and let it go in grass

Cycled through the Glen Iris wetlands today and slowed to check for turtles and birds but there really wasn't much about -- too hot and sunny. The main pond is very overgrown with rushes or reeds and the water surface almost invisible under a layer of floating weed. A few juvenile moorhens[1] stalked about on the garden beds, something about the way they were walking reminded me of lyrebirds foraging. Up in the trees some Noisy miners[2] and Pee-wees[3] calling
