2022/0927/1700 — blow to the head

Another day, another swoopy boi that I didn't know about. Riding home along the Scotchmans creek trail around sundown and there's a constant shrieking from all the Noisy miners[1] in the bushes, and a few other nearly-ready-to-roost noises from other birds. Suddenly there's a solid thump to the side of my head half knocking me across the path, and out of the corner of my eye I see a flurry of feathers as a bird hurtles back up into the trees, loudly squawking at me. Almost too quick to identify and I'd have guessed one of the miners from the earlier noise, but by the size of it and weight of the blow I'm guessing a magpie[2]

When nesting some magpies ignore you, some shout at you to tell you off, some fly up to a lookout branch to intimidate and check you out, some swoop, some make contact with beak or feet and a few, like this one, go for the solid body-check
