This summer has been much cooler and damper than average, so although we get days up over 30°C, there haven't been so many much over 35°C. The humidity and overall moisture around certainly shows up in the amount of insect life, although the cicadas that come out with the very high temperatures don't seem about as much. Over the weekend I've met a constant stream of butterflies as I've been walking and riding around; on Saturday I collected an Australian admiral[1] in the face — known now as the Yellow admiral but I still call them that from the butterfly book I had as a kid. In the garden there seem to be one or two Common brown[2] flapping lazily around almost any time I look out, and occasionally the much larger and more striking swallowtails — the Dainty swallowtail[3]. There's the ubiquitous pests, the Cabbage white[4], but today while riding along the edge of the bay near Sandringham I had a Wanderer[5] flap past at head height. Its been years since I've seen any, or noticed them, but in the last year I think I've seen three or four at different times
