Blondie Plays Cupid

1940

2.5/5

The titles of these Blondie movies continue to confuse me. So, Blondie and Dagwood are on their way to Blondie's aunt's place out in the country for 4th of July, because Blondie's afraid of fireworks, and I guess fireworks don't exist out in the country. Over the course of the movie, they do meet a couple in a Romeo and Juliet situation, but Blondie doesn't get involved with it as much as run away from a guy with a shotgun. I'm not sure at what point she "plays Cupid." In fact, for half the movie I thought I must have been watching a different one, because it was all about 4th of July and not anything remotely romantic.

They get the near divorce over with at the very beginning, and even Baby Dumpling knows this is getting old ("Mommy, are you going to divorce him again?"). Dagwood gets to punch the shotgun guy, so I'm glad the are again making good use of his skills as a pugilist. Baby Dumpling and Daisy are in mortal danger *twice* this time, too, once when Baby drives a car, and once when he actually falls off the roof, but onto Dagwood, so he suffers absolutely no injury.

Also, Baby drives the car around forever, into a haystack, where they find a needle, just so they can make a needle in a haystack joke, but a guy actually brings a shotgun to a wedding, but there are NO shotgun wedding jokes? I'm disappointed in you, Blondie.
