This is a Judd Apatow directed movie featuring Pete Davidson, Marisa Tomei, and Bill Burr. This movie is a semi-autobiographical story of Pete Davidson's life. It's about a 24 year-old man's journey dealing with the death of his father and finding himself directionless.
I will say off the bat, I enjoyed all the performances in this movie except for Pete Davidson as Scott. Marisa Tomei played a very loving but over-worked nurse named Margie, and Bill Burr surprised me with his endearing portrayal of Ray, a firefighter trying to be a better, more understanding person. Steve Buscemi is also in this movie and plays another fireman who works with Bill Burr's character, and as expected his performance was also great.
However, my favourite character was definitely Scott's friend Kelsey played by Bel Powley. Her character's visible frustration with Scott and how she handled her feelings for him was incredible if not enviable. She plays one of Scott's childhood friends that wants something more for Staten Island and from her relationship with a non-committal Scott. Powley's delivery of certain lines had me cackling and I felt like she was one of the funniest characters in the movie.
With all that said, I just couldn't get into the character of Scott, and I think it's due to Pete's performance. Where I felt something for all the other main characters, I couldn't care less about whether Scott became a tattoo artist. Also, how are there so many people in Scott's circle of friends and family willing to allow him to practice tattooing on them?! Whether it was the character of Scott or Davidson's performance, I just wasn't into it.
This movie was around two hours long which means instant points off from me. I genuinely believe this movie would have been better at a tight 90-100 minutes. But overall, this movie is a decent watch if you want to throw something on that doesn't require your complete and undivided attention.
